Luke 2:8-14 KJV

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Who was the angel addressing when he said, “For unto you is born this day…?  Was it not directed toward the shepherds?  After all, the angel could have said, “For unto the world is born this day…” but he didn’t.   It was a personal message, delivered not to the masses but to the few.  It was an intimate message to a few shepherds.  As far as they were concerned, the Savior of the world was born to them.

God may seem to us to be the unreachable, untouchable, un-see-able, awesome God of the universe, but to us as individuals, He is a personal Savior.

Consider the following:

John 1:1-3, 14 KJV

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

We know that the invisible all-powerful God made the universe.  As God, He is above all: He can’t be seen or known by mortal man nor can His habitation be found.  We know that God is the judge of mankind and that all of creation worships Him.  But when God became a Savior, He came to each of us individually.

When you follow the life of Jesus, you discover that His focus was not on the masses but on the individuals.  Jesus called each of His disciples individually to follow Him.  Jesus took notice of the individuals wherever he went.

Jesus noticed Zacchaeus up in a tree and called to him by name (Luke 19:1-10).  Jesus noticed Nathanael before he ever came to Him (John 1), and He noticed the woman who was healed by just touching Him (Mark 5:25-30).  Jesus cried in compassion when He noticed Mary’s grief at the death of her brother (John 11:35).   The scripture tells us “we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities (Hebrews 4:15).

Jesus was given to each of us individually.  He is the Son of God.  So just remember: when Jesus hung on the cross, it wasn’t the masses that he noticed but you and me.  And just like the shepherds of two thousand years ago, the angels are shouting out to each of us that the child born in Bethlehem is God’s gift to you and me.

As God gave Jesus to the world, Jesus has given us to the world.  We are His gift.  Following Jesus’ example, we should notice also those around us.  The presents we give each other are not important, but the invisible God whom no one can see or know on his own.   If we each share the gift of salvation that we have received as we do the acts of kindness, then others can come to know Him as we have.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord!

Let us live as though we truly believe it!

Merry Christmas!

Amen.
