Historical

The bible is full of repeating patterns.  For instance, there were seven literal day of creation.  This was followed by seven thousand years with each thousand-year period reflecting these literal days of creation (i.e. God created the SUN on the fourth day, and then created the SON of God four thousand years later).

Whatever God has done or said is relevant to believers of all ages.  Today, Christians can read the creation account and allow it to speak to them of the progression of spiritual growth of their own life (i.e. first God speaks and then the earth responds).  We can see that once God began a work it continued (i.e. God said let there be light and light was created and continued to shine.  God spoke into existence life and it continued).  Throughout the scriptures we can see how the things God did and said were timeless (i.e. the Tabernacle was a place where the ancient Hebrew people could worship God, it was a shadow of the Messiah who would follow, and it speaks to us today of the steps we must take in our own spiritual development to approach God).

I believe that prophecy in the scripture is no different.  Prophecy is timeless, especially one like we find in the Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ.  By timeless I mean that prophecy provides significance to every age of the Church, not to just the one existing at the time of the prophecy.  Christians of every Church age have been able to read in the Book of Revelation the spiritual state of the seven churches and see their own spiritual condition.  The seven churches [whether they represent Church ages or Church profiles] are relevant to every believer that has ever lived, regardless of when they lived.

Similarly, the early believers looked at the prophecy of revelation and saw very clearly that the beast was Rome, the Great Whore was Israel that rejected the Messiah, and the time of great persecution was at that time occurring.  The prophecy and promise of this book was therefore a source of hope and consolation to them.

The early reformers like Luther strongly promoted the interpretation of Revelation as a tool to support their cause.  There was no question in their minds that the Great Whore was the Catholic Church.  So compelling was their argument that in some places in Germany the control the Catholic Church exercised over the population shrank from 90% to 10%.   It’s interesting that today the message of Luther is all but lost in the very denominations that embraced his interpretation.

Today

I believe that whatever relevance the New Testament book of Revelation has had to saints in prior Church ages it does not change or diminish the significance it has for us today.  I want to present a possible message that this book speaks to us today – specifically, the four horseman.

The Four Horseman

Revelation 5:1-7 KJV,

1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?

3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.

4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

I believed the time frame that separates these seals is somewhere in the neighborhood of 22.5 years.  Why?

The horseman of the first four seals are similar to each other and yet distinctly different from the last three seals.  The fact that they are similar tells us that we can examine them in like manner.  In other words, if we discover the way to interpret one we can then use this same key on the other three.

Each of these horsemen has primarily three elements.  There is the horse, the rider, and then together they are described to have “went forth.”   The horse is the strength behind the rider.  It’s what gives the rider power and momentum.  The rider is a single “significant” event in history that marks the opening of the seal.  Sometimes the rider carries [or is called] something that either speaks to the event or the movement that follows.  The horse can be understood as a historical movement that leads up to the historical event and makes the event possible.  Together, they (the horse and rider) go forth (i.e. they synthesize and form a new movement) in yet a new historical movement.

I believed the time frame that separates these seals is somewhere in the neighborhood of 22.5 years.  Why?

Revelation 8:1 KJV,

And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour.

The silence for “about” a half an hour can be determined as follows,

2 Peter 3:8 KJV,

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

If a thousand years is as a day to God then one half hour would equal 1000 divided by 48 (48 half hour periods in a day).  This comes out to 20.8 years.  But Revelation 8:1 doesn’t say “the space of half an hour.  It says “about the space of half an hour.

The White Horse, 1907 (1900 – 1908)

Revelation 6:1-2 KJV,

1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

The White Horse represents the holiness movement that preceded the outpouring of the Holy Spirit around the turn of the century (1900).  It was the strength and catalyst behind the Pentecostal movement of the 1900’s.

As early as the late 1600’s Pietism began in Europe stressing the need for personal devotion and morality.  It was believed that there was no more profound expression of ones faith.  This combined with the Wesleyan doctrine of evangelism cause the holiness movement to circumvent the globe by 1900.  It was the holiness movement was the strength behind the outpouring of God’s Spirit that followed.  It caused people to seek God as never before for His strength and power over sin in their lives.

The rider, or Conqueror held in his hand a bow.  There is no description as to the type of bow he held.  I believe that the description of the bow is found in the following scripture:

Genesis 9:12-16 KJV,

12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

I believe the bow in the hand of the conqueror is a rainbow [as described in Genesis].   God said that He gave the bow to mankind as a token (i.e. symbol or sign) of His covenant.  The conqueror went forth to conqueror with the covenant of God.  As long as the church continued to be propelled by the strength of holiness it was unstoppable.

The first seal was opened somewhere between 1900 and 1908.

For at least 50 years before 1900 there existed random accounts of people experiencing an experience similar to that of the original Pentecost on AD33.  The promise of a deeper experience caused many to privately explore the book of Acts.  However, this was usually condemned as heresy and therefore public teach of the subject was strongly discouraged.  This opposition succeeded in creating a damn of Living Water of God Holy Spirit, a damn that would eventually break.

On December 31, 1900 – the advent of the 20th century – a few bible poor students at Bethel Bible College started praying at or around midnight in an old house just outside of Topeka, Kansas.  Suddenly the Spirit of God fell and a young woman, Agnes Ozman, began to speak in tongues.  Within a few days half the student body experienced the same phenomena.

The sprinkles of the latter rain were beginning to fall and for the next few years other reports of this phenomina began to shake the established church of that time.  Then in February 1906, a Holiness church in need of a pastor decided look at a man who Terry and Julia Hutchins recommended.  His name was William Seymour.  Soon after coming he began to talk about “speaking in tongues,” which he argued was the proof that the Holy Spirit had come into a person.  This news was not received well and consequently the church did not accept William Seymour.

William Seymour then began to hold meetings in the home of Richard and Ruth Asberry.  Many people who once attended the First and Second Baptist church began to come as well as some from nearby Holiness churches.   These meetings were interracial and involved everyone.  Women as well as “non-ministers (lay people)” ministered and exercised spiritual gifts.

In April 9 1906 Edward Lee, who provided housing for Seymour, and Jennie Evans Moore began to speak in tongues with many others soon followed.  As news spread William Seymour and his group rented an abandoned warehouse on Azusa Street.  Previously it had been used as a delivery stable.  Soon visions and prophecy began to come forth about impending disaster just before a major earthquake hit California.

The first seal represents the re-establishing of the covenant of God in the early 1900 that was birthed from the holiness movement of the preceding century.  The event was the re-establishing of God’s covenant through the work at Azusa Street.  The movement that led (or made possible and strengthened the movement) to this event was the Holiness movement, and the movement that “went forth” was the Pentecostal movement of the 1900’s.

The Red Horse October 1929,

Revelation 6:3-4 KJV,

3 And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.

4 And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.

About the space of a half hour (God’s time) after the outpouring of God’s Spirit at Azusa Street the Great depression began in the United States.  The affects of the depression were felt around the world with the economies of Europe also suffering.  The Great Depression may have been the single greatest reason for Hitler coming into power, the murdering of millions of Jews, and the 35 to 50 million who died during the greatest war to ever strike the face of this planet.

The following article describes how that the Great Depression of the United States beginning in 1929 was the single most important event that eventual brought about World War II.

“…Hitler held rallies in the mid 1920s and these did not win him many votes. There was something else that made voters turn to Hitler- the Great Depression. Before the Great Depression, most people were happy with the way things were- Stresemann introduced the Rentenmark after the hyperinflation and Germany got back onto her feet. Nothing Hitler said could have gained him votes and by most was regarded as a 'bore in a bar'.

In his speeches, Hitler provided scapegoats such as the Jews, communists and the Treaty of Versailles. It was true that Jews held positions of influence beyond their numbers and when jobs were in demand, anti-Semitism rocketed. After the Great depression, the unemployed and businessmen were looking for scapegoats and Hitler provided these. However, before the Great Depression, as election results show (in 1924 the Nazis had only 2% of the vote and in 1928 3%), Hitler's speeches had no major effect on German voters.

In my opinion, the Great Depression was the most important reason why Hitler rose to power in 1933. On Tuesday 29 October 1929 the American Stock exchange, Wall Street, crashed, causing the world to be plunged into an economic depression. Germany was hit badly as America recalled the loans to Germany negotiated under the Dawes Plan (1924). In 1932, there were six million unemployed in Germany. The chancellor, Bruning, seemed to be doing nothing to help the crisis and followed a policy of deflation. It was realized that the Weimar constitution was not working and one strong man was needed to lead Germany out of the crisis. The unemployed were desperate for work and would do almost anything to get it. A German worker describes why he joined the Nazis in the 1930s: 'I was unemployed for many years. I'd have made a pact with the devil to get work. Hitler came along and got me work, so I followed him'. As unemployment rose, so did the Nazi's popularity. The more popular the Nazis became, the more chance Hindenburg would consider Hitler becoming chancellor.

The Depression acted as a 'catalyst' which made the unemployed and businessmen remember the Treaty of Versailles. In March 1933, the Nazi party won 288 seats in the Reichstag, becoming the biggest party. However, just because the Nazis were the largest party did not mean that Hitler's appointment was inevitable. Many chancellors before Hitler had not even been leaders of parties, for example Franz von Papen.” History Essays and Notes, by Matthew Pinkney.

We all know the result of Hitler gaining power in Germany.  His coming to power combined with his grave hate of the Jewish people and other non-Aryan races lead to the greatest destruction of humanity.  It is estimated that in less that a decade between 35 and 50 million people died (civilian and soldiers) as a result of World War II.  To get an understanding of the magnitude of the battles consider that 7,000 US soldiers were killed and another 18,000 were wounded just to capture a small desolate island called Iwo Jima. Following this 12,000 US soldiers were killed and another 35,000 were wounded capturing another island called Okinawa.  On Okinawa it is believed that 100,000 Japanese were also killed.  Other than Gettysburg, few other battles out side of World War II were as deadly.

The historical event depicted by the second seal was the Great Depression.  The movement [depicted by the Red Horse] that led to the historical event was the blood (i.e. Red Horse) shed during the First World War and the Treaty of Versailles that followed that placed many restrictions on Germany and forced it into a costly post war debt.  Public displeasure of this treaty is what Hitler and the Nazi party used to rise to power.  But just as the Piety movement in the centuries before 1900 was necessary to bring about the Pentecostal movement of the 1900’s, the displeasure of the Treaty of Versailles was not enough to bring Hitler to power.  It needed the Catalyst of the Great Depression that brought about great poverty in Europe.  Nazism and the Second World War was the movement that went forth as a result of the First World War (Red Horse) and the Great Depression (the Rider).  Together they “went forth” take “peace from the earth.”

Now move forward about the space of a half hour in God’s time.

The Black Horse April 1951,

Revelation 6:5-6

5 And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.

6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

Many people look at this scripture and see a time of famine.  But is that really what this describes.  A pair of balances does not represent famine.

Many people are quite familiar with the blindfolded statue that stands in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.  It holds in it’s hand a pair of balances.  We all know that the statue represents justice, but what does the scales represent?  The scales represent equality.  The voice that says, “A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny...” is not talking about famine but equality.  Wheat is worth more than barley.  It’s talking of a time of inequality.

Barbara Johns was 16 years old in April 1951.  She had enough with the segregation that separated the African-American children from the same opportunities as the Caucasian children.   The Farmington, Virginia all-black Moton High School was so overcrowded that the school was forced to build three tarpaper shacks.  Children spent their winters sitting on the cold floor in their coats.

Barbara and her fellow students arranged for the school principle to be called away then announced a student assembly for later that day.  450 African-American children went on strike.  The NAACP eventual took the case, which ended up before the Supreme Court.   The now famous Brown Verse the Board of Education effectively ended school segregation and ushered in a time of equality the USA had never experienced before.

What is now called the Black movement was the straw that broke the back of human oppression in the USA.  There was also 100,000 Japanese Americans who were unconstitutionally detained during World War Two as well as the treatment of the American Indians in the preceding century that fueled the fire of equality for all mankind.

The historical event depicted by the rider was the Brown and NAACP appealed to the Supreme Court on October 1, 1951 over racial segregation.  The [what is now called] Black movement was the movement that lead up to this event, and the “Equal Rights” movement is what “went forth” as a result of this.

The Pale Horse October 1973,

The Pale Horse October 1973,

Revelation 6:7-8 KJV,

7 And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.

8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

The in probably no more significant seal for Christians today that the fourth seal – the final horseman.

The Pale or Grey Horse is key to the nature of the movement that brought about the historical event – Death (the rider “was Death”)!  Grey is sort of black and sort of white, but at the same time is neither.  Grey is neither black nor white its… grey.

Having roots into the Rock-n-Roll music of the late 1950 and reaching maturity in the 1960’s a new dogma of “anything goes” was birthed in this nation.  This steady erosion of moral values challenged every standard for human behavior.  The idea that “if it feels good do it” was typical of the “drug craze” of that generation.  It is obvious that nurtured by such epic social revolt just about anything could happen, and it did.

What was unthinkable a decade before was legalized in 1973.  January of 1973 the Supreme Court upheld the charge of Roe in a landmark decision that legalized abortion on demand.   In October of the same year the law went into effect and the legalized murder of the unborn began.

We see that the “anything goes” movement that brought down moral standards of right and wrong (black and white) was the movement that gave power to the historical event of abortion on demand.  Together these have and are ushering a new era (or movement) that we are seeing beginning to reach maturity today.  Center to this movement is a clever plan by Satan to devaluate human life.  This is the movement that went forth from the opening of the Fourth Seal (i.e. “Hell followed”).

The legalization of murder [of the unborn] has synthesized with the movement of anti-morality (i.e. complete break down of social moral standards).  It is producing an environment where there is a complete loss of value for human life.  We have already seen the legalization of Euthanasia in many countries, and it is just a matter of time before this comes about in the USA.  Following this we can expect to see the legalization of the murder of the criminally and mentally insane.  From there it is just a small step to conclude that [what is considered] right-wing extremist Christians are also insane.  Once this happens no Christian will escape the persecution, which is to come.

The remaining seals cannot be viewed in the same context of the first four (i.e. historical movement giving power to an epic historical event that then synthesizes with the previous movement to bring about a new historic movement).   I believe that we are currently living in the days of the Fifth Seal with the Sixth Seal set to open, but that will need to be for another time.  I’ll give you a hint of what to look forward to:

Revelation 6:12-17 KJV,

12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Amen.
