Some Things are Indescribable for a Reason

A couple weeks ago during a meeting, God said something to me that was very perplexing:

"Some things are indescribable for a reason."

I've spent a lot of time pondering this; it's a very interesting thought. I decided to look up the word "indescribable" in the Bible, and found that it appears in the NIV only once.

2 Corinthians 9:15 - Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

This is intriguing. God's gift, according to Paul, is indescribable. But what is God's gift?

God's gift is salvation.

Salvation cannot be described. There is no recipe or method for getting saved. It is something unique to each individual, and no saved person will be able to tell you exactly how they got saved, or why they feel like they're saved. I could tell you a few events and actions that I did that led up to my salvation, but I wouldn't be able to tell you when my relationship with God took off or why I feel the way I do.

I could give you a recipe for salvation. Some of you have probably heard of the popular "Four Steps to Salvation" method. Though I do not exactly disagree with the general idea, salvation cannot be boiled down into a few simple directions to which everyone can follow. I didn't get saved by reading the Four Steps to Salvation. I didn't even get saved all at once. My Christian faith has been more of a journey than an explosion of passion that happened all at once then faded into the background.

Some get saved because they're in a lot of emotional or physical pain and go to God as a last resort. Some because they heard someone preaching in the streets. Some because they realized that their entire "Christian" walk was completely fake.

The only common factors between all occurrences of salvation are God and prayer. There is nothing else.

"Asking God to come into your heart" and phrases like that are simply clichés that people want to use to try to describe the indescribable gift of God that is salvation. In doing so, the usual outcome is the creation of dry machines that think they are saved simply because they followed the instructions of a descriptive document. All of these machines are exactly like each other because they all have made the exact same gestures.

You cannot be saved just because you've fulfilled the requirements listed on a sheet of paper. Your salvation is unique, and nobody on this earth can tell you whether or not you're saved. Only you and God know that. If you follow someone else's path toward salvation, you will only end up being lost just as you were before. To witness true salvation for yourself, you must make your own path.

Some things are indescribable for a reason.
